Gannon Talbert (1975)

Coach: Baseball 1964 -1975

 

Inducted: 2000 - 2001
Details

Taught and coached in Carteret County from 1939 to 1975 – 36 years.
Coached Football, Basketball and Baseball at the Charles Wallace school (old Morehead City High school) and coached from 1964 to his retirement in 1975.
HS Basketball team snapped the 93 game win streak of The Beaufort Seadogs in triple overtime.
Taught Algebra and was long time AD. WCHS baseball field named in his honor.

 

Patricia Patrick (1980)

Lettered in 3 sports all four years of high school.
3 x All-conference in VB.
2 x all-conference in Basketball.
All-conference and sectional champion in Track.
2 x Most outstanding Female Athlete.
Best All Around Female Athlete.
First WCHS athlete to receive a VB collegiate scholarship.
Has coached at WCHS, ECHS, and is presently teaching and coaching at BCMS.

 

Larry Horton (1968)

Played four years of volleyball. Member of State Championship team in 1988. Voted Outstanding Athlete in Volleyball.
Played basketball four years and ran track.
Earned Female Athlete of the Year Award her senior year.
Member of the National Honor Society.
Received four-year volleyball scholarship to Appalachian State University. While there, earned All Conference and All Tournament recognition. Was Named The Scholar Athlete of the year and graduated Cum Laude.

Details Recipient of numerous and well deserved awards including Outstanding Citizen Award.
Recognized by NCAE for outstanding service to students and teachers of Carteret County Schools. Instrumental in starting the Midget football and basketball leagues. Support was acknowledged by more than just the athletic teams, he received a plaque for his support of the WCHS Band Booster Club and band members.
Nicks’ support of his community was so great that Galantis Drive and Symi Circle in Professional Park were named in appreciation of his accomplishments.

CC News Times Player of the Year - 1985 – 86
News and Observer – All EastFour year scholarship to ASU
MVP 1988 and 1989.  2 xs All Conference. Scored 1133 points in three years. Pulled down 688 rebounds in the same time period.
Played in Paris as member of ALL STAR TEAM.

 

Dr. James C. Harvell

Sport Medicine/Team Manager: 1973

Details

Right arm of the coaching staff during his four years at WC as equipment manager and athletic trainer for all sports.
Upon leaving WCHS, he attended Ohio State University and was Athletic Trainer for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the famed “Woody Hayes” for four years.
Now an Orthopaedic surgeon at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
He has been published 13 times in professional books and journals.

 

Karen Fischler Rudolph

One of three females who were first four year letterman in track
Team Captain –  junior and senior years
Set school records in 880 yd dash and 800 meters
Anchored mile relay team for school record – all four years
Second in 400 meters in state meet as a freshman
Winner in Carolina relays as a senior
Total of eight UNC track records.

 

Robbie Lasater

Baseball/Football: 1991

Details

Played Football and Baseball all four years
Football – Best Defensive Player; MVP; 2xs Conference Champion.
Centura Bank Scholar/Athlete for highest GPA in FB and BB all four years.
Baseball -  Four years on varsity; two times MVP. Played in NC State Games in 11th and 12th grade.Played BB at NC State – 1992 – 1996. All ACC in 1995; All ACC Scholar/Athlete. Played on various summer teams and on the USA baseball team.
1997 – Signed with Baltimore Orioles and was on South Atlantic League Championship team.Presently Head Varsity Baseball Coach at WCHS. His teams are three time conference champions and have made it to the 3rd round of the state playoffs three consecutive years.

 

David Yancy

Basketball: 1985

Details

Was a three year starter on the WCHS Varsity basketball team and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Basketball accomplishments include: being a co-captain as a junior and senior, a two time all-conference selection, conference
player of the year, a member of the eastern regional all-tournament team as a junior, most valuable player of the eastern regional as a senior, and an all-east selection as a senior. He culminated his high school career as a leader on the 1985 3-A state championship team, coached by Billy Widgeon. After graduating from West in 1985, David continued playing basketball at Guilford College in Greensboro. While at Guilford, he was a four year starter, three year team captain and a
member of the all-rookie team. His team made the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Tournament in Kansas City in 1989.
David currently resides in Durham, N.C. with his wife, Sheila and three children, Jalen, Jordan, and Gee.  He works in theRaleigh school system mentoring at risk youth.

Michelle McIntosh Willis

Basketball/Volleyball : 1985

Details

Lettered three years in volleyball, three years in basketball, and one year in softball. During her senior year, she was selected best all around female athlete and most athletic. After graduating from West in 1986, she attended East Carolina University where she played volleyball as a left hitter/blocker from
1986 – 1990. During the 88-89 season, Michelle led ECU and the Colonial Athletic Association in digs for the season with 384 digs and a 4.17 dig average. She was ranked ninth in the country for digs by the
American Volleyball Coaches Association and was named defensive player
of the week three times by this same association.Michelle graduated in December 1991 with a BS in Occupational Therapy.She is presently an occupational therapist in the New Hanover CountySchools. Michelle currently resides in Wilmington, N.C. with her husband Kelly and two children, Shane and Erin.
